🔥 Cigar Tip: How to Properly Store Cigars Without a Humidor (Yes, It’s Possible)
Whether you’re a seasoned aficionado or new to the world of premium cigars, one question eventually comes up for nearly every enthusiast:
“What do I do if I don’t have a humidor?”
At Habana Port Cigar Merchants, we understand that sometimes your humidor is full, you’re waiting for one to arrive, or you’re traveling and can’t bring yours along. The good news? You can store cigars without a traditional humidor—if you know how. Here’s how to do it right.
🪄 Why Cigar Storage Matters
Premium cigars are handcrafted with care and aged to perfection—but they are also highly sensitive to changes in humidity and temperature. Too dry, and they’ll crack and burn too hot. Too moist, and they risk mold or tight draws. Ideal storage keeps cigars at 65–75% relative humidity (RH) and a temperature between 65–72°F.
🧠 Humidor Alternative: The Tupperdor Method
The “Tupperdor” (short for Tupperware humidor) is the most popular humidor alternative. It’s easy, affordable, and effective. Here’s what you need:
What You’ll Need:
- A clean, airtight plastic or glass container (like Tupperware or a food-grade jar)
- A humidity control pack (Boveda 69% or 72% RH works great but either the 65%, 69%, 72%, or 75% will be fine; it just depends on personal preference on how dry or wet you prefer your cigars within this acceptable range).
- Optional: Spanish cedar sheets (for aroma and moisture balance)
How to Do It:
- Place the cigars inside the airtight container. If you have cedar sheets (saved from cigar boxes), add them to the bottom and between rows.
- Add your Boveda pack—one pack for every 25 cigars is a good rule of thumb.
- Seal the container and store it in a cool, dark place (avoid direct sunlight and heat).
This setup can maintain your cigars beautifully for weeks or even months.
💡 Bonus Tip: Rotate Your Cigars
If you’re storing cigars in bulk—even in a humidor—rotate them every couple of weeks. Move the cigars from the bottom to the top to ensure even exposure to humidity. This prevents some cigars from becoming overly moist while others dry out.
📈 Why This Matters for Cigar Aficionados
Understanding proper cigar storage is essential to protecting your investment and maximizing the flavor, aroma, and burn quality of your sticks. Whether you’re aging a rare box of Pelayo, traveling with a few Serie España Madrids, or just starting your collection, proper care ensures every draw is smooth and satisfying.

February 21, 2025

Greetings, Habana Port fans,
This year marks our company’s 15th Anniversary. To celebrate our milestone, we commissioned Eladio Diaz to craft 15,000 special cigars. Don Eladio was the master blender of Davidoff for many years. His former factory celebrated a line called the Master Blend series that showcased his personal blends. We loved one so much, we wanted to see if he could recreate that blend.
Success. And so we are offering this Ecuador Corojo wrapped cigar in one vitola (6×52) that have been rolled in Eladio’s own factory called Tabacalera Diaz Cabrera in the Dominican Republic. The cigars have been aging since March 2024. They are packed 15 to a box and each single retails for $15 (15% off a box which makes each cigar $12.75).
Notes of almonds, espresso, and cedar are present in this refined blend. We are proud of this cigar and hope you will find them as enjoyable as we do.
The Habana Port 15th Anniversary (or Decimoquinto Aniversario in Spanish) is available now in-store or online at habanaport.com.
